Your kidneys are essential for keeping your body healthy, yet kidney disease often goes unnoticed until it’s too late. This World Kidney Day, take a step towards better kidney health—stay hydrated. Let’s raise awareness and protect our kidneys for a healthier future. Love your kidneys, they love you!
The kidneys are bean-shaped organs, about the size of a fist, located beneath the rib cage on either side of the spine. They filter approximately half a cup of blood per minute, removing waste, excess water, and maintaining the balance of water, salts, and minerals in the body. Additionally, the kidneys regulate blood pH, produce glucose when blood sugar is low, and release renin to raise blood pressure. They also generate calcitriol, which aids calcium absorption, and erythropoietin, which stimulates red blood cell production. Each kidney contains about a million nephrons that filter blood through the glomerulus, reabsorb essential substances in the tubule, and excrete waste as urine.
