Diabetes is a chronic condition marked by insufficient insulin or poor insulin use, leading to high blood glucose that gradually damages nerves and blood vessels. Its global burden continues to rise, with 14% of adults affected in 2022 and many receiving no treatment, especially in low- and middle-income countries.
Diabetes caused 1.6 million deaths in 2021, nearly half before age 70, and contributes significantly to kidney and cardiovascular mortality. Symptoms include excessive thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, blurred vision, and unintentional weight loss. Type 1 diabetes results from lack of insulin production and requires lifelong insulin therapy, while type 2 diabetes—now over 95% of cases—develops slowly and is often preventable through maintaining a healthy weight, regular physical activity, balanced eating, and avoiding tobacco.
