Tuberculosis is one of the top infectious killers in the world. In 2020, an estimated 1.5 million people passed away from TB. This disease is spread from person to person through the air. When people with lung TB cough, sneeze, or spit, the propel the TB germs into the air. A person need to inhale only a few of these germs to become infected. We also need to recognize some of the symptoms of TB, such as cough with sputum and blood, fever, chest pain, wight loss, night sweats, and weakness. Not only the symptoms, we need to know the key drivers of tuberculosis epidemic. The key drivers are diabetes, tobacco, poverty, and HIV.
COVID-19 disruptions have reversed progress in the fight against tuberculosis. Fewer people are able to access TB prevention and care services.
In conclusion, TB remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious killers. Each day, over 4100 people lose their lives to TB and close to 28,000 people fall ill with this preventable and curable disease. The theme of World TB Day 2022 - ‘Invest to End TB. Save Lives.’ –conveys the urgent need to invest resources to ramp up the fight against TB and achieve the commitments to end TB made by global leaders.
