On Saturday, 28th of October 2018, AMSA-Unhas executed one of its big events, Hands Speak Words. We invited some extraordinary deaf people from GERKATIN (Gerakan untuk Kesejahteraan Tunarungu Indonesia) to teach us and some high school students some basic sign languages. What we wanted to achieve with this event was to spread of awareness regarding deaf people, as well as giving people the opportunity to learn sign language, so communication with deaf people is possible.
We opened the event by some opening speeches made by the representative of AMSA-Unhas. Then, the participants were taught about “Deaf Awareness” and “The difference between SIBI and BISINDO”. After that, participants were divided into smaller classes, where they were taught some basic sign languages like alphabet, days, and others. Next, they were regrouped and were shown some videos made by GERKATIN. “Communication Without Border”
